My understanding of ebay transactions is no sales tax.
If this retailer is shipping out of state from California no tax should be due. Contact them and ask what is up. You could also call the California Franchise Tax Board for an official answer.

California collects sales tax on goods sold and shipped out of California. She is not trying to get an extra 8.25% from you. If you want to see the detail rules on sales tax in CA, go to the website of Cailfornia State Board of Equalization.

Ask them where their “nexus” in North Carolina is. If they don’t have a nexus, they don’t collect the tax.

Unless you are having the item shipped to someplace in CA, they shouldn’t be charging you sales tax since you don’t live in CA, unless they have some kind of physical facility in NC. Contact the seller and ask them what they are doing. They might just have made a mistake, or not realize they shouldn’t be charging you sales tax, or it could just be a con – or maybe they have a store in NC.
